How to Delete an Authoritative Address

Overview

Deleting an authoritative address permanently removes it from the Authoritative Address Tool and cannot be undone. Because authoritative addresses are used to validate pet owner addresses for licensing, you should only delete an address or unit when it is no longer valid (for example, it was added in error or no longer exists).

Important: Before deleting an address or unit, always review whether any pet owners are currently linked to it. Deleting an address may prevent those pet owners from being matched to an authoritative address until their records are updated.

Let's Begin!

Step 1: Open the Authoritative Address Tool

From the Administrator Dashboard:

1. Scroll down to Data Management / Administration.

2. Select Authoritative Address.

Step 2: Search for the Address

Search for the address you want to delete.

Search Tip: Less is more. Instead of entering the full address (for example, 670 Adobe Drive), try searching using just the house number and street name, or even the street name alone.

Step 3: Open the Address Record

Locate the correct address in the search results and click on View / Edit.

Step 4: Review the Address Before Deleting

Before making any changes, review the Pet Owners at this Address section.

If pet owners are listed, consider whether deleting the address is appropriate, as those records will no longer be matched to an authoritative address.

If you only need to remove a specific apartment, suite, or unit:

  • Scroll to the Units section.

  • Click the X beside the unit you want to delete.

If you need to remove the entire address:

  • Click on Delete Address.

Step 5: Confirm the Deletion

The system will display a confirmation message explaining the impact of deleting the address or unit.

Review the message carefully before confirming.

Once confirmed, the deletion is permanent and cannot be undone.

After the Address is Deleted

A confirmation banner will appear indicating the address or unit has been successfully removed.

If the deleted address was linked to pet owner records, those accounts will need to be updated with a valid authoritative address before they can be validated again.

Best Practices

  • Only delete addresses that are no longer valid or were created in error.

  • Always review the Pet Owners at this Address section before deleting an address or unit.

  • If you simply need to correct an address, edit the existing record instead of deleting and recreating it.

  • If you're unsure whether an address should be deleted, contact your supervisor before proceeding.
