How to Transfer a License

Overview

License transfers allow an active license to be moved from one pet to another under specific circumstances. This feature is only available in certain jurisdictions.

If you are unsure whether your organization allows license transfers, please contact your managing administrator. If your organization does not currently offer license transfers and would like to enable them, please reach out to your dedicated Relationship Manager.

A license transfer is most commonly used in the following situations:

  • A pet owner’s licensed pet has passed away, and they have adopted a new pet within the transfer eligibility timeframe established by your organization.
  • A pet has been transferred to a new owner, and a valid license needs to be moved to the new pet owner’s account.
  • A license needs to be transferred between two pets belonging to the same owner.

Let's Begin! 

Step 1: Locate the Pet Owner Account

Use the Pet Owner Record Search tool to locate and open the appropriate pet owner profile.

Step 2: Remove the Previous Pet (If Applicable)

Navigate to the pet profile the license is being transferred from.

If the pet has not already been removed from the account:

  1. Click Edit beside the pet’s name.
  2. Change the pet’s Status from Active to Removed.
  3. Select the appropriate removal reason.
  4. Click Save Pet Details.

This ensures the previous pet is no longer associated with the active license.

Step 3: Start a New Order

Once the pet has been added to the new pet owner’s account, the license transfer process continues from that account.

From the new pet owner’s profile:

  • Click on New Order.
  • Proceed through the order workflow as normal until you reach the License Selection screen.

Step 4: Select the License Transfer Product

Within the License Selection screen:

  1. Locate the license product dropdown menu.
  2. Select License Transfer.

If your organization charges a transfer fee, the fee amount will appear alongside the product.

Step 5: Complete the Order and Verify the New License

Continue through the remainder of the order process as normal, including:

  • Tag selection (if applicable).
  • Order summary review.
  • Payment collection.

Once the order has been completed, the transferred license will appear on the new pet’s profile.

Return to the pet owner profile and open the new pet’s account.

You will now see:

  • The transferred license attached to the new pet.
  • Any associated transfer fees included in the order history.

Step 6: Cancel the Previous License

The final step is cancelling the original license attached to the previous pet.

  1. Open the previous pet’s profile.
  2. Click on the hyperlinked license name.
  3. Change the license Status from Active to Cancelled.
  4. Click Save.

This ensures there is only one active version of the license within the system.

Important Notes

Some organizations choose to honor the original license dates rather than issuing a brand-new term during the transfer process.

If needed, administrators may manually adjust the transferred license dates after the order has been completed.
